Many of you probably know of him from his solo career known as just “Gackt”. But Gackt’s
musical history stretches far beyond his solo career into the famous Malice Mizer days of Visual Kei. With Malice Mizer, Gackt boosted his and everyone else’s career in the band, sky high. After MM’s one year hiatus,
Gackt joined under the name of Count Camui…but Gackt just stuck a hell of a lot better. After his explosion in fame
with Malice Mizer, Gackt felt he needed to move on and to be creative in his own light. He created “Gackt Job”,
using musicians he had known from previous years, like Kurosaki You (From his even earlier days with Cains:Feel) to bring
to life his solo work.
After Gackt left Malice Mizer in 1998, he traveled to the U.S. to do some recording. According to a DVD that I have, he was so overcome with the need to please his fans with his
work that he concentrated entirely on his career, making him exhausted. It says that, for a while, Gackt was hospitalized
from stress and lack of energy. I assume that, during this time, Gackt must have lost sight of what he truly wanted to do,
resulting in his one year disappearance. But the memory of Gackt had not yet disappeared, and so his comeback a year later
was welcomed with arms wide open. He became the Gackt that we all know of today.
Gackt is one of the most well known artists in Japan…he’s even got a video game coming out where the
main character is based off him. -_- All the fan girls you come across will declare him as “Gackuto-san” (Mr.
Gackt) and some more daring ones will use “Gackuto-kun” (Pronounced KOON. “Kun” connotes a high amount
of familiarity, and it’s said that Gackt does not allow anyone to use this type of high familiarity with him, except
for loved ones. Yeah… fan girls do not count as “loved ones”.)
Many people in other countries, especially ones who’ve never bothered with J-rock
anything, will look at Gackt and probably say, “What a pretty girl…I think.” (I’ll bet ya’-9
out of 10 times.) Yeah, well it’s obvious Gackt isn’t a girl…he’s got the famous “magnum”
after all, ahaha! So what is it that drives people to listen to his music and pay loads of money to watch his concerts and
save millions of pictures of him in a folder on their computer titled “Sexy Gackt” and obsess over every tiny
aspect of his life and dream about him in their sleep and picture their boyfriends as him…ect, ect, ect…(you get
the picture). It’s the voice…it really is. If he was just a pretty face with a crappy voice, he might have some
fans…but not as many as he has today. Gackt has one of the most powerful
and well known singing voices you will ever come across…In fact, it’s such a great voice, many artists have tried
to copy-cat him. (Of course, they’re all pegged as wannabies by his loyal fans.)
