Kagrra, pronounced Ka-Gu-Ra, is the Japanese name given to a performing art which was
practiced in ancient temples long ago. Kagura (Kagrra) literally means, “Music of the Gods”. The concept of traditional
music is very apparent in Kagrra’s music. Kagrra is one of the few Japanese bands which present the true root of Japanese
culture to listeners, unadulterated. Many Japanese bands do not even go as far to integrate some traditional culture.
Originally Kagrra had been known as “Crow” under the Key Party label. But
with time, the name was changed to Kagrra.
Kagrra is widely known as a visual kei band, mostly because of their more feminine look
of dress. It’s not uncommon to see the band members dress in traditional clothing, either, like in the Kotodama music
video. In any case, all of their dress is very eloquent and beautiful.
Their sound can be very metal sounding at times, but traditional instruments are often
in the music to give an intriguing spin on it. The vocalist, Isshi, has a very beautiful, and somewhat haunting at times,
voice. Talent is very apparent in this band.
Kagrra’s major debut wasn’t until 2004, despite the fact that they had been a band long before
that. However, because they signed on with the Colombia label, much more well deserved recognition
was given to them.
A song that is well known amongst Kagrra fans would be Kotodama, which I believe reflects
the talent of this band. So if that’s currently on rotation, make sure to download it if you are at all interested in
Kagrra’s music.
